The Cor Jesu community of teachers, students, alumni, administrators and staff, together with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart and the construction crew, gathered Friday morning, May 12, 2023 to celebrate the blessing of the foundations and the laying of the altar stone and capsule for the chapel at the Piazza del Sacro Cuore.
Most Reverend Guillermo V. Afable D.D, Bishop of the Diocese of Digos, in his message, commended the presence of Cor Jesu alumni even in the far reaches of his diocese. Building the chapel, he said, is an important reminder of the school’s role as an extension of the Diocese’s evangelic mission in this part of the world.
Recalling the first ground breaking ceremony for the chapel in 2009, and the many intervening challenges in between, the school president, Br. Ellakim P. Sosmeña, S.C. expressed his support for the initiative of Cor Jesu College Alumni Association, Inc. in spearheading the chapel project.
Asked when the chapel will be finished, Darren Simon Edem, the third and youngest association president, so far, replied: “In God’s due time” – wise words from a young leader.
“Today is just the beginning of our journey. We hope for the community’s continued financial support to finish the construction of the chapel” said Engr. Nelson Tandug, CJC’s Alumni Affairs Officer. He then issued a challenge to all alumni and supporters to aim at conducting a mass in the chapel during the school’s Foundation Day celebration later this year, as he closed the event.
Rev. Fr. Phillip Calambro, OSB officiated the ceremony.
